Building Upgrades will be Grandiose!

Posted 06-04-2013 at 12:21 PM by berserker
New website is just around the corner and with it we will reveal some big surprise we promised earlier, but for now let me shed some light on building upgrades.

In original Totem Tribe only towers was upgradeable. In Totem Tribe 2 - you can upgrade any building!

Upgrading buildings takes time and resources but also make the structure be more useful. Take a look at this Crop Shed below:

These 3 buildings are in fact the same building but of different upgrade levels! First one is level 1, second one is level 10 and last is 20. The levels between 1 and 10 and 20 have distinct look too!

This Crop Shed stores Food and the higher level is, the more Food it can store, thus when you have excessive amounts of resources, you can invest them into bigger storage to be able to accumulate more resources.

And these are Barracks levels 1, 10, 20:

Like in original Totem Tribe in TT2 barracks can only support limited number of units per barrack. Upgrading Barracks will increase number of supported units. With barrack level 1 you can only have 1 unit at the same time, but with level 20 it will house up to 20 units.

How many soldiers are there in a unit? If there is only one then will we have to build several barracks at the beginning before demolishing them later on as our resources grow enabling us to upgrade? If so, would that only apply if you are playing a war campaign or will we be attacked early in the game by other tribes (not players) regardless of what type of campaign we choose to play?

    1 unit = 1 soldier
Normally you won't be able to build several barracks, in order to build second one, you will have to acquire some unique resource on the world map. This is made to keep the army sizes balanced. However there will be several barrack-like structures you can build (like hunter camps and shaman tents in TT1). This way all unit types will be used, unlike TT1 where best strategy was to amass shamans.

Furthermore you can settle another town and build a barracks there, remember you can transfer army between towns as you see fit.

To add to what I said above - we have such requirements because we don't want armies to be too big where soldiers loose their individuality and you start treating them as numbers.

We want each villager to be unique, having unique auto-generated name, etc. You will be able to upgrade individual units too!

I think army in tens or big armies in hundreds of soldiers will be ok. I don't want to have 10000 units cause they become a faceless crowd.

So is the maximum upgrade level 20? Also, will they change appearance as you advance in technology? I'm still thinking of the technology tree as being Civilization series style with different eras.

Good to hear that the new website and forum are almost ready.

Different buildings have different maximum levels, Ususally its 5, 10, or 20. Mostly 10 and 20.

Units will change appearance once you upgrade them. I.e. if you upgraded unit armor the armor will be visible on him and you can see it. If you upgrade weapon, the weapon will be visible too. But unlike TT1, upgrades are not some global change to all units, you build an upgrade and then apply it to unit individually, thus you might end up with several units of the same type, but with different upgrades. That adds up to the unit individuality I mentioned above.

I meant do the buildings change appearance as you go up in technology levels or change eras (if that's even what you guys are doing). Unless the upgrades are that.

So I build a whole building for one guy? I do like that I could give some guys hand guns and some guys rifles or something like that.
    Sounds so complicated though.

suppose, if we upgrade the armor of a fighter and then he dies in a battle, will he be autogenerated from his barracks with the upgrade done before or we will have a new unit with no upgrades? please answer this quickly im getting a bit frustated

@ jeresandy - darn, not the first one here, but I brought my tent, sleeping bag, my fav pillow, a mini stove and lots of food. I am ready and waiting.

@ fireball1471 - I too want to know if the dead unit comes back as he was or if we have to start all over. i would be very frustrated if we had to start over each time a unit died. i would lose track of who needs what.

First of all, unlike TT1, this time around units will not be auto-spawned. That is because we have resources now and computer should not decide how to spend them for you. Therefore you will have to order units when you need them (and when there are enough empty space in the proper building).

As for the upgrades - yes, you will have to apply them manually, but we will make sure doing so won't be cubersome babysitting.

The way we see unit upgrades is when you have all buildings loaded with units, but you still want to invest resources into making your army stronger, thats when you start building upgrades for units and applying them.

I know it might sound complicated, but by the time you will face the need in those upgrades, it will be clear to you.
