How to fix crashed islands
Sometimes your save files became corrupted and when you are trying to return back to previously completed level the game crashes. This means that save file for that level is broken and you need to start a new profile to play the game from scratch. However there is a posibility to reset that particular crashing island and replay it without starting the game from scratch.

To do so, go to the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Enkord\Totem Tribe\
(under Windows XP)
C:\ProgramData\Enkord\Totem Tribe
(under Windows Vista)
You will know it is the right folder if you will find file "profiles.dat" in it and several other files with names like "quest-XXXXXX-12.dat".

Those files named like "quest-XXXXXX-12.dat" represent saves for particular level where "12" in the end of file name means it's save for level 12 which is "Mist Island".

Therefore if you have Mist Island which crashes for you, all you need is to delete that file.

Here is the list of numbers and corresponding levels:
#1 - Tetala Island
#2 - Mushroom Island
#3 - Dolphin Island
#4 - Monkey Island
#5 - Seagull Island
#6 - Redrock Island
#7 - Witch Island
#8 - Skull Island
#9 - Frozen Vale Island
#10 - Yeti Island
#11 - Cradle of the North
#12 - Mist Island
#13 - Scorched Island
#14 - Volcano Island
#15 - Beetle Island
#16 - Shark Archipelago
#17 - Island of Worship
#18 - Ruins of Dream Shore
#19 - Comet Crash Site
#20 - Inside the Comet
#25 - Lonely Iceberg
#26 - Lost Temple
#27 - Guardian Moon

Please note that those folders might be hidden, so you will need to select "show hidden files and folders" setting in Windows Control Panel.
Here is how to do it:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Click on the Start button. This is the small round button with the Windows flag in the lower left corner.
3. Click on the Control Panel menu option.
4. When the control panel opens you can either be in Classic View or Control Panel Home view:
If you are in the Classic View do the following:
1. Double-click on the Folder Options icon.
2. Click on the View tab.
3. Go to step 5.
If you are in the Control Panel Home view do the following:
1. Click on the Appearance and Personalization link.
2. Click on Show Hidden Files or Folders.
3. Go to step 5.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
6. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide extensions for known file types.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
8. Press the Apply button and then the OK button.

After you delete particular file you will be forced to replay that level from the start however I think it's better than replaying whole game.

P.S. If you are running old version of the game like 1.0 or older, those files mentioned above might be placed under "data" subfolder within folder where you installed the game (Usually C:\Program Files\Totem Tribe\data)

P.P.S. if you will find file with ".xml" extension like "level11.xml" - DO NOT DELETE IT. This is wrong file and will corrupt your game if you delete it. File you need has exactly ".dat" extension/type so don't delete other files, keep searching for correct ones.

Thankk you for Totem Tribe. I have been pushed beyond my normal boundaries by this game - and even to the extent of looking at the game code, sort of thing I have never attempted before. Love this game.:D
Website Forum fantastic help.

Thanks for this guide. My save file for Dolphin Island had become corrupted and I was able to replay it after deleting the file.

The corruption seemed to happen just after I completed the Lonely Iceberg - a save file about 4 MB in size was replaced with one of around 276 KB.

crashed islands
Not sure if I am posting in the right thread but...I have another question on this. I have 2 different profiles in the game and have different crashed islands on each. Is there a way to tell which dat files go with which profile?

berserker 03-03-2009 08:08 PM

Only if your profile have different name lengths. The longer name the more XXX characters you will have in save name "quest-XXXXX-YY.dat"

My Ruins of Dream Shore must be corrupted and I have all but that gem. That was the longest level ever to play and I have to re-do it, oh no!

Totem Tribe--Witch Island file
ok, I deleted that file, because it would not load, and it still kicks me out.

Probably you've deleted wrong file.

deleted island
I was being dissed from game when I tried to go back to witch island. I did as instructed and deleted the file. When I went back to re-do it, she gives me the quest to find the roots, but her hut is missing. I have the roots, but cannot give them to her now. I have deleted this island twice with the same results.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I bought this game from Big Fish when it first came out. Is there anyway to get the 1.3 version?

Probably, you have already found solution yourself.
Just put roots to the place where hut was earlier.
Here is the screenshot with that area.

It seems like Witch Island is a bit buggy. It also crashed twice for me. Was this issue addressed in v1.03?

Guro 01-29-2010 06:48 AM

Crashed during playing, or the same thing, when you leave an island and later game fails to return to it?

pavlovscat 01-31-2010 10:23 PM

I've now had this happen on two other islands (Mushroom & Mist) once each, but it is most common on Witch island (5 different times now). When you quit the island to return to the map, the game either errors out & goes to desktop, or the computer hangs and needs to have the game process ended through Task Manager. If this happens, it is not possible to return to that island. That island will need to be deleted in profile.dat & replayed. This can happen the first time on the island, or on a return trip.

This time the game crashed when I tried to save at Beetle Island, and I wrote down the error message. Perhaps this will mean something to the programmers.

Error: Access violation at 0x0F9040AB (tried to write to 0xF3FE8235) program terminated.
If I try to return to Beetle Island, the game crashes to desktop. No error message.

Thanks. This is correct. Most of the folders are indeed hidden. https://imagicon.info/cat/14-22/vbulletin-smile.gif
