Interactive Conversations

Posted 03-04-2013 at 09:11 AM by berserker
In original Totem Tribe there wasn't much talking going on, thefore it was unclear what kind of personality main heroes had.

This time in sequel we decided that characters should express themselves better. And since the player now will be represented by his or her custom created character, we thought it would be cool if player can play out their character in coversations too!

Thus we created interactive conversations in Totem Tribe 2!

When some character speaks, you can ask questions, respond to their words, even take some action throughout the conversation. Take a look at this:

There are often several response options that allow to ask different questions and possibly even solve quests differently!

Some responses are only available when you have specific item or have done something or met someone before. The conversations are not just plain text split in chunks - you response DO matter in most situations throughout the game.

Let us know if it is a good idea, or you prefer more simple things like locating items and solving puzzles. Does the story matter for you and would you care if it will differ if you act differently throughout the game (in conversations too) ?

    Can we pause the game?
Because it's tiring to have playing without any rest

No, you won't be able to pause the game, the game will be running 24/7 even when you sleep - the building will go on, resources will be mined, etc.

You can order up construction of several buildings and then go to sleep, and when you wake up - everything is finished + you have plenty of resources accumulated overnight.

I'm not big into too much dialogue in games myself, I generally skip through it but, having said that, if its limited and adds to the outcome of the game I'm all for it. If you need a native english speaker to proof read, I can do it and I'll do it for free

Oh no, I hate games that play on without me.
While waiting can be boring I don't like to come back and find my people have been doing things while I was away.
I always uninstall games that do this. It makes me feel like I am not needed to play the game!

Unfortunately that is the drawback of making an online game - when a lot of people play it, it is unacceptable to allow one player to pause it and make everyone else wait.

Also the ability of the game to continue the construction, research, and training while you offline makes it more fair, so those people who don't have time to sit in the game 24/7 won't be at disadvantage to those people who can.

Furthermore this only concerns the boring stuff (building delays). Puzzles, hidden objects, and other story-related things won't happen without you.

Thanks about your proposition, but the proplem is at alpha stage the game will be updated and edited frequently, so the text will be constantly added and edited and it might be not reasonable to proofread until it's not finalized.

However we will see what can be done about that. Maybe we will integrate some kind of error reporting in the game, so player could submit fixed grammar right inside of it...

Thats good, I have often been tempted to email you to point out your grammatical errors along with a better way of saying something, but thought that you might think I was very cheeky

Idea for those that skip the story: A quest journal, as in certain RPGs.
One can skip all the dialogue and then go to the journal and see only the important bits. This works better when moving between chapters/levels to keep track of events and it would say something like "[Character A] says that [Event/Item B] is happening/located at [Location C]". You'll still miss the dept of the story, through.

I don't think telling the truth is cheeky and I am well aware of our English skills so we will do something about it when proper time comes.

A lot of people criticized TT1 that it's objectives often was not clear enough, so this time there will be quest log wich writes down your progress briefly.

Thanks berserker for clarifying. As always I will just have to try it. I know and love TT1 and TTG with all my heart so am just hoping this will bring me in to a type of play I have never enjoyed. Maybe it will broaden my horizons.

    Hey berserker,

More interactive conversation can add a lot to the game, especially if there are whole game reactions to your 'personality'. TT1 was fantastic (clearly I'm a fan!) but it was a little hard to connect with the story since the world was stagnant and you could only press 'ok' - so I think you're on to a winning idea. Personally I would just keep two things in mind: too much text in questions/responses tends to make a game feel like a book, and I assume a lot of your fan base are 100% completionists, so having reactions/quests that can NEVER be done (ie. one response equals one quest, another response equals a different one) could be frustrating Other than that, the game looks like it's shaping up GREAT! I love real time games, where your little people work while you sleep and this is probably going to be the most advanced one I've ever played. Thanks for keeping us in the loop and asking for feedback - yours is the only development group I've come across where this happens. Can't wait for the next update!

Actually there will be things that will never be done in one walkthrough due to non-linear nature of the conversations. And I dont think it would be frustrating, I think it would rather add replay value

Yes, we will try to make your current account here to work as the game account to simplify things a bit and prevent second registration.

Personally I prefer it when I have to figure things out for myself. I found TT and TTG to be good in that it lays out the 'tutorial' over several levels without being overly annoying, and let's you play whilst ramping up the challenges. I thought it was a very good combination of letting us play and explore, whilst giving an entry point into how to do it.

Quest log is not the guide, it is well... a log. It contains things you already figured out. For example if you talked to some character and that character needs some item, the log will contain that information. It will not tell you where to find it, just things you already know.

Will one player be able to interact with another player? Like when two player walk up to one another will there be a text box for them? Can the players join together their troops and attack a certain area?

The players can interact with each other, but not like in these conversations - they are for conversations with non-player characters.

To talk with other players there will be private chat and in-game mail.

Yes, players kinda can join forces, you can attack some town or reinforce it. When you reinforce it, your troops will stay there and defend it from any attacks. Several players can send their troops to reinforce same town and their troops will be defending it together. This way you can help your friend to defend, or she can help you.

The attack is similar, except if you want troops to fight some town together, players have to arrange time of the mutual attack.
