the scarabs are on different islands, i don't remember which ones, and in the three locations in the desert ( i suspect they will be needed there, probably to unlock another location or to obtain something)
the shark teeth will be needed on firefly island and you can obtain them after you get the harpoon from lonely iceberg
for the feathers you will need again ( or maybe when you are looking for the remaining jewels) to go on almost every island, and look near the crow trees

yes, the scarabs will open a new area

Here's a hint: there is one shark tooth in a location that doesn't have any water. (And as a bonus, you don't need to harpoon a shark to get it!)

I noticed that when a white shark appears in an island, it makes a "Da DAA!" sound as soon as you begin. At least it did for me.

Scarpetta - where did you find that last scarab? I have 7 & am (again) pulling my hair out trying to find the last one. I know I found them on: (highlight to view)

red rock, skull, volcano, beetle, desert, & I think I found the other 2 in oasis & abandoned city, but I forgot to write everything down in both places so I'm not 100% sure
